for pure readableness, go straight to ‘The Prisoner’s Dilemma’ by William Poundstone. Good overview of the basic ideas and the key problems.
There is also this nice bit it in where two RAND profs do ‘think-aloud protocol’ while playing with a simple payoff table that encouraged tit-for-tat strategies. I wouldn’t accept their conclusions with only two participants though.
