The deity’s in the details.

Title freely adapted from Mies’ : “God is in the details”; the goal of holonic selfconsistency of the architect’s parti though all scales, all points of the experience. See also Adam’s invocation of Aalto today:

“Always consider a thing in terms of its next larger context”

I love this post at Rogue Librarian, about using good typography as the starting point to a greater design journey.

“Start with the typography, and use it to define your style, simplify your color scheme, and clean up the visual lines in your site.”

  1. I know Adam attrbutes it to Aalto, but I believe the quote’s actually from Eliel Saarinen, given as advice to his some Eero.

  3. Ack! Eek! You’re right! No wonder I couldn’t find it when googling it.

Thank you thank you thank you. Correction’s on the way.

(Do me a favor and spare me the “they all look alike to me” jokes?)

    thanks & love from Tokyo!

  5. So, speaking of misattribution, I discovered something I found to be very curious just a moment ago. While learning all about the Userati at Chris McEvoy’s humorous site usabilityviews.com, I realized that the Matt Jones pictured isn’t our favorite he-of-the-blackbelt variety Matt Jones, but actually another interaction designer from London named Matt Jones — http://www.cs.waikato.ac.nz/Staff/matt-jones.html. He sorta looks like THE REAL Matt Jones even, close enough perhaps to throw some folks off. So, wow, two folks from the same city, of the same name, both trained in interaction design — perhaps never has there been a surer sign that the profession’s finally become established.

  6. No problem. Didn’t mean it as a public shaming — just pointing out what I find to be an interesting coincendence. I mean, even if Matt Jones isn’t so much of an unusual name, it’s still funny to me that there’s a risk of mistaken identity in a field that’s still as much of a niche as ours. The point about userati is what a small, incestuous world the UCD community is, right? But perhaps it’s not so small afterall…
