Happy Strayleearr Day!

It’s Australia Day, and pictured is one of that country’s greatest achievements: Harry’s Floater pie, from Harry’s Cafe De Wheels. The floater is a meat pie with it’s top taken off, replaced with fluffy mashed potato formed into a crater, and filled with gravy and mushy peas.
Thanks to Eric Scheid of the awesome IAwiki for showing me the pastry nirvana that is Harry’s at Wooloomooloo.
Some other fantastic Australian things:
- The man about town’s choice for fine apparel: Imperfectionist
- Creativity/Machine
- The Avalanches
- SoulPacific
- TripleJ
- Being mauled by the vicious, dumping waves onto the gravel/sand at Bronte Beach and then going for a smoothy and/or a breakfast beer at Sejuiced, Bronte.
- Home of newstainment: CNNNN and The Chaser
- The Standard, The Laundry, The Night Cat Melbourne.
- Back-in-black and almost every record that has sampled it as a result.
- which leads to: duh-nunner-nunner-nuh-nuh… Angus!
- Introducing quantum mechanics to teenagers, it’s the other Angus… Dr. Angus Gray-Weale
- Rolf, who I met when I was about 4.
- and of course, Foe.
Foe has a more poetic commemoration of Australia Day over at her place…
More microcreativity
Primer a sci-fi film, cost $7000 to make and has won the Sundance film festival.
A quid from each of the BadSignal subscribers could have financed it…
There’s lovely
“”If minority languages don’t make the leap to being used on the [computer] desktop as a fully functioning part of that desktop, people are going to close off a large part of their working lives to their minority language and use English instead.
“If it’s important to have road signs in Welsh, it’s even more important to have Welsh on computer screens where people are using the language every day.”
Instead of being driven mad by messages like “Browsing the network is not possible”, Welsh computer users can now tear their hair out when “Nid yw pori’r rhwydwaith yn bosib” keeps popping up.”
Solar cycles

I think it’s getting darker later here in Helsinki, and The Sun is creeping up in the sky a bit. At least when I left the office today the sky was dark-blue, not pitch-black.
It is very beautiful here at the moment… and very (-13c) cold.

Jazzed!
This is too good to let pass. Official Mazda Autobot CGI… and mini anime flash promo here. And, yeah – I know Jazz was a Porsche.
[thanks Pete!]
The language game
Cited on “Leading Edge” tonight, the work of Martin Nowak. A selection – “The Evolutionary Language Game:
We explore how evolutionary game dynamics have to be modified to accomodate a mathematical framework for the evolution of language. In particular, we are interested in the evolution of vocabulary, that is associations between signals and objects.”
Mmmmm.
In fact…

Social network visualisations look rather fetching on t-shirts. Jessica and Bill will tell me off for being faux-science, but nevermind.
Whaddyathink?
